Most people use storage containers for very ordinary things such as furniture, business stock or the family camping kit. Every so often, though, when abandoned or auctioned containers are opened, something rather more unusual comes to light. Here are some of the strangest real discoveries.
Designer Clothing Worth a Fortune
One abandoned storage unit was bought at auction in the UK for just over £300. Inside was more than £55,000 worth of designer clothes and accessories, including Gucci shoes and fur coats. Quite the bargain.
Pokémon Cards and Retro Consoles
Another buyer spent £1,400 on a container and discovered a treasure trove of rare Pokémon cards and old gaming consoles. The lot was expected to sell for nearly £60,000. A very good return on investment for anyone who grew up in the 1990s.
Vintage Wine, Old Court Records and a Didgeridoo
In Middlesbrough, three friends spent £260 on a unit and came away with bottles of French wine from 1943, an 18th century Suffolk court log, and a didgeridoo. An odd combination, but it turned out to be worth thousands.
A Forgotten Aston Martin
An Aston Martin DB2/4 was once uncovered after sitting quietly in storage for more than 50 years. Only a few hundred were ever made and this one was in remarkably good condition. Not a bad thing to stumble across.
Spanish Gold
In one case, a container was found to hold 16th century Spanish gold coins valued at around half a million pounds. Sadly there was no treasure chest or map, which takes some of the fun out of it.
What You Can and Cannot Store with Us in the Storage Containers
These stories are entertaining, but at National Self Storage we have clear rules on what is not allowed in our containers.
You must not store:

-
Hazardous and dangerous items such as explosives, ammunition, toxic waste, asbestos, chemicals or radioactive materials
-
Illegal items or goods not owned by the customer
-
Goods owned by a third party without their consent, knowledge and understanding of the rental terms
Our containers are for practical, everyday use. They are perfect for household goods, furniture, business stock, seasonal belongings and caravans at selected locations.
